More details on each course and workshop are available on the project search page.
November 2007:
Professor John Bowman, a plant geneticist (UC Davis), presented a research seminar at UNSa.
October 2007:
UNSa and the Fogarty Center sponsored a graduate course in pathogenic viruses at UNSa (October, 2007) presented by Professor Rajal and two professors from Tucuman. The course attracted participants from public health in Salta and biochemists from local hospitals. There is a great deal of interest in developing expertise and capacity in Salta since presently samples have to be sent to Buenos Aires for analysis, a slow and expensive process. This is an important step in developing collaborative efforts in teaching and research training between the National University campuses in Salta and Tucuman.
September-October 2007
UdelaR and the Fogarty Center sponsored a series of three 3- hour workshops on contamination of the Rio de la Plata by cyanobacteria and their toxins for all of the 120 lifeguards of Montevideo on Sept 10, Sept 24 and Oct 1, 2007. There was a theoretical part concerning the cyanobacteria and cyanotoxins (introductory level) followed by work in small groups to encourage opinions and suggestions on how to improve communications with the swimmers and general public concerning prevention of exposure during blooms. Lifeguards were taught how to differentiate between "Presence of Disperse Colonies" and "Scum" and that our experimental results suggest that the risk associated with swimming in "Disperse Colonies " is moderate or low, while the risk associated with swimming in "Scum" is very high. Professor Beatriz Brena and a former Fogarty Center trainee, Daniel Sienra (previously a lifeguard for 9 years), presented this series of workshops.
June 2006:
A 1-week short course, Medidas de Protecci—n para Areas Costeras. Programa Train-Sea-Coast/Río de la Plata, was presented at Colonia del Sacramento, Uruguay. Co-sponsor: FREPLATA.
March 2006:
A workshop on "Geographical Information Systems for Epidemiology", a 3-day workshop co-sponsored by FIC, CONICET, and INTA, was presented in Balarce, Argentina. Professor Rajal was an invited participant.

Methods in respiratory epidemiologic studies
Dr. Stephen
McCurdy, Associate Professor of Epidemiology & Preventive Medicine at UC
Davis, presented a one day workshop at the University of Chile in Santiago on
June 18th. He also participated in a week-long course in Buenos Aires, Argentina
the following week on intensive research methods in epidemiology as part of
the faculty presenting the annual International Respiratory Epidemiology course
sponsored by the American Thoracic Society.
September 2002:
The need for and benefits of eliminating lead from gasoline in Uruguay
Held at the Chemistry Institute, UdelaR, Uruguay, September 9th
Invited lecturer Michael Walsh is the co-chair of the US EPAs Mobile Source
Advisory Subcommittee and is actively involved in projects in Brazil, Hong Kong,
Moscow, and China. The main goal of the workshop was to contribute to the ongoing
discussion in Uruguay concerning the importance of eliminating lead from gasoline.
Due to the economic difficulties of the country there is no general agreement
as yet about the overall benefits of that action.
August 2002:
The situation of pesticides in Uruguay and the use of immunoassays as control
tools
Held in the Seminar Room of the "Instituto de Higiene", University
of the Republic, Montevideo, Uruguay
July 2002:
Special Seminar on Silicosis and Mesothelioma in the State of Rio de Janeiro,
Brazil
Sponsored by The Western Center for Agricultural Health & Safety in cooperations
with The Center for Comparitive Respiratory Biology & Medicine and The Fogarty
International Center of the National Institutes of Health
Featured speakers: Drs. Vinicius Antão and Germania Pinheiro from the
State University of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
May 2002:
A two day program
on viticulture and enology was co-sponsored by the Facultad de Quimica of the
University de la Republica and the Uruguayan industry. As part of the overall
program, Dr. Andrew Waterhouse, a professor in the Department of Viticulture
and Enology at UC Davis, reviewed the current state of scientific research on
the interaction between moderate wine consumption and health. Dr. Waterhouses
lecture, attended by approximately 70 members of the Uruguayan wine industry
and by additional faculty from the University, focused on the role of wine in
reducing heart disease.
January 2002:
Montevideo. Our Uruguayan collaborators organized a two-day workshop on the
characteristics of ELISAs for measuring deoxynivalenol, the fusarium mycotoxin,
in grains and flour. The workshop included a laboratrory section where the technical
personnel of the milling industry and the food regulatory agencies of several
Uruguayan counties were trained.
